Dwarfs Ready

My introduction to Warmachine has not been as smooth as I might have liked.

For one thing, I’ve come to the realisation that I’m not very keen on either of the factions represented in my starter box. This was a bit of a blow, though not a fatal one. I had always more or less planned to eBay the Menoth figures, now I will just do the same with the Khador ones. Hopefully I will recoup a fair share of my outlay and I will still have the rule book for future use.

The other problem though is that I’m not really sure what, if any, Warmachine faction I do want to try. At the moment the front runners are Cyngar and Mercenaries, but even then there are bits of each range I’m not that keen on. Not that I would cast aspersions on the quality of the ranges, but there is no one range that grabs me. With Khador, it was the warcasters that put me off. With Cygnar it’s the warjacks (except the Cyclone, which is awesome). I experienced similar difficulties with Warhammer Fantasy, as there was never any one army that made we want to do them in the way 40k armies did.

The fact is, with a baby due within a month and the short-to-medium term financial tightening that will ensue, this is not the time for embarking on any hobby project I’m not at least reasonably sure about. So for the time being, Warmachine might get shelved and will concentrate my much more limited resources on Firestorm Armada and Dystopian Wars.

This is not to say that I will never do anything with Warmachine. It’s a good game set in an interesting universe and it scores points with me for not needing too many models in order to play. What I’ve read of the rules so far (when not distracted by Twitter or my book club book) seem to be well written and I know that there is a huge player base out there to tap into when the time comes.

Almost any gamer will admit how easy it is to get distracted by the shiny and the new. There are all sorts of intriguing possibilities out there. Warmachine, Dust Tactics and MERCS are all things that have tempted me recently, and I am certainly intrigued what Privateer Press’ ‘Level 7’ sci fi game will be like. GW even managed to cause a few moments of temptation with their new Necron release. Executed with their usual combination of very high quality and very high expense. But I have plenty of stuff to paint already, and I have still barely learned the rules to Firestorm Armada and Dystopian Wars. Perhaps this is a time to try and do a few things well rather than lots of things poorly.

I still might come back to Warmachine. If I do, I think the most likely army I would do (based on current infomation) is the Searforge sub-list of the Mercenaries army. These dwarf mercenaries are amongst my favourite in the whole range and though it’s a very limited list it’s all of stuff I like. And It’s also all stuff I could use if I ever expanded my army into a Highborn Covenant army.

Here is a rough army list worked out using the iBodger app and not much knowledge save what I could glean from the Battle College wiki:

High Sheild Gun Corps

Army List – The Smokewind Host Eldar

Following on from some of the other army lists I’ve posted, I dug out my copy of Codex Eldar and put together a 2000 point list to go with the others.

I did briefly play with an Eldar Army, briefly and with little success about for or five years ago. This has some similarities to the army I tried to build then but is adapted and I hope is a bit more potent.

I would like to have included a Wraithlord, as it’s an awesome model, but I’m not sure they are cost-effective points wise and the wraith sight rule is a constant niggle.

Any thoughts?

Army List – Battle Dogs Space Marines

The Space Wolves were my first Warhammer 40,000 army, so when the 5th Edition Codex came out I inevitably bought it out of nostalgia.

The army list is a good one so I did play around with some ideas. After I came up with the Brazen Angels, I thought of other ‘DIY’ Chapters I could do. One of the ideas I liked was the ‘Battle Dogs’ who I envisage as a Chapter with swashbuckling, even piratical traditions.

I’ve never done much with Drop Pods before so I had a go at a drop list. Eagle eyed readers will notice that there are not enough Pods for everyone. I envisage the Lord and his power armoured retinue scouting on their own, then summoning the rest of the force when the target is sighted. I included some Land Speeders because I’ve never really used them before and thought they fit the theme.

Army List – Grey Knights

This is an army list I worked out for a Grey Knight force I was thinking of collecting back before I decided to have a hiatus from buying anything from GW.

In case you were wondering, I did consider taking Dreadknights, but although It’s a good model, I’m not that impressed with the weapon options and was increasingly aware of my head for some anti-tank capacity. Hence the ‘Rifleman’ dreadnought with psybolt ammunition. If I ever did collect this army, I’d be sorely tempted to use Relic Contemptor Dreadnoughts from Forge World.

Some of you might notice the themed weapon choices on the Terminator Squads. I realise that it might not be entirely pragmatic in game terms, but I like the idea so I went with it.

Army List – Corinthian 9th Imperial Guard

I have always liked the Imperial Guard. I had am army back in the day of 2nd Edition 40K. Back then I had Catachan models, or ‘Jungle Jims’ as we called them at the time.

The 5th Edition Codex is pretty fantastic, so I did play around with ideas for collecting an army for some time.

Here is the 2000 point outline I put together. It includes my two current favourite Leman Russ variants, and the Devil Dog, with it’s awesome Melta Cannon. Some people advised me to take a Commissar Lord instead of a Company Command Squad, but I decided I wanted the potential benefit of the orders system. I also like the idea of tank-hunting Sentinel walkers, hence the lascannon. The Infantry Squads  have heavy bolters or autocannon so i don’t have to worry too much if I need to move them. The Heavy Weapon Squads will cover them with their missile launchers.

If I were to add to this army, I would add another Leman Russ – possibly a Vanquisher for dedicated anti-tank support, a Valkyrie to carry my Storm Troopers, a Primaris Psyker, and of course, more infantry.

HQ
Company Command Squad (147) WS3·BS4·S3·T3·W1·I3·A1·Ld7·Sv5+ 1× meltagun; medi-pack; regimental standard; vox-caster; krak grenades; carapace armour; lasguns or laspistols; close combat weapons; frag grenades.

Army List – Brazen Angels Space Marines

I’ve posted once or twice about my Brazen Angels Space Marine army. But I’m not sure if I ever posted the army list.

This is the 2000 point list I worked out when I decided to round out the collection.

As some of you may know I originally planned a 3000 point list, which was similar to this but with lots of Land Raider dedicated transports (and a Razorback for the Devastators) added. It also had two Sanguinary Priests, one to support the Assault Squad and one to accompany the Tactical Squad riding the Storm Raven.

In this army, the squad with the melta weapons goes in the gunship for opportunistic tank-hunting while the gunship also acts as a general mobile reserve, as does the Baal Predator. The Predator Annihilator provides dedicated anti-tank support. The Chaplain will lead the Assault Squad to maximise their destructive potential. The idea of an all-missile launcher Devastator Squad originally came from @CaitoGalenus. I’ve used such squads in the past and they are surprisingly effective.
